Course Overview

The Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at work qualification is designed for anyone who might need to provide first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill at work and covers a wide range of injuries and illnesses.

It is essential that you can trust the person who will care for you if you are injured or suddenly ill at work.

This regulated qualification is in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981 and provides learners with the skills and knowledge to deal with first aid situations in low and high risk environments.

Course Structure

Unit 1

The roles and responsibilities of a first aider
Accident reporting
Establishing patient consent
Contacting the emergency services
The contents of a workplace first aid kit
The principles of scene safety
Undertaking a primary survey
The causes of unconsciousness
Placing a casualty in the recovery position
Dealing with seizures
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
Dealing with a choking casualty
The principles of infection control
Recognition and management of shock
How to administer first aid to a casualty with small cuts, grazes and bruises
How to administer first aid to a casualty with a small burn or scald
How to administer first aid to a casualty with a splinter

Unit 2

Taking a patient history
Undertaking a secondary survey
Dealing with fractures, dislocations and strains/sprains
Dealing with suspected head injuries
Dealing with suspected spinal injuries
Recognition and management of chest injuries
Recognition and management of burns and scalds including chemicals, to the airway and by electricity
Common causes of foreign bodies in the eyes
Dealing with foreign bodies in the eyes
Recognition and management of asthma
Recognition and management of diabetes
Recognition and management of extreme temperatures
Recognition and management of heart conditions
Recognition and management of a stroke
Management of incidents involving electricity
Recognition and management of sudden poisoning
Recognition and management of anaphylaxis
